What better way to begin the Festival of Lights than with a bit of joyful Jewish folk music? As Jewish families around the world prepare to celebrate Hanukkah, the Tucson Jewish Museum & Holocaust Center invites you to join us for an afternoon of musical delight featuring the Klezkats.
Klezmer is a traditional style of Jewish folk music often heard at weddings and festive celebrations. The Klezkats perform mid-century style klezmer, drawing on historically authentic Odessa and Romanian traditions, along with a few original compositions. The Tucson Jewish Museum & Holocaust Center is honored to present the only collegiate klezmer ensemble performing in Southern Arizona.
The ensemble stars three talented University of Arizona students:
Qianqian Soyfer on violin. Qianqian is a Master’s candidate in Violin Performance, with a background in musicology under Dr. Matthew Mugmon. Her research focuses on Jewish American concert music and historical klezmer practice.
Maxim Leibowitz on guitar. Maxim is finishing his Bachelor degree in Music Education, he was the music specialist for the Alper JCC in Miami, and a Jewish songleader and songwriter.
Michael Jurkowitz on percussion. Michael comes from the Pride of Arizona marching band, and was a shabbat service songleader for the 24-25 season at UA Hillel.
